With this drawing I was trying to directly translate the melody of "Take the A Train" into a line drawing. The pattern that represents the repeated melody in the song is found throughout the upper half of the drawing, the drumbeat in some of the lowest lines, and the crazy other stuff reflects the commotion and bustle the horns try to convey in solos about riding the train.
"Thad Jones" was drawn while listening to the Village Vanguard Orchestra play "All of Me". I was trying to capture John Mosca's epic trombone solo and simultaneously the whole sound of the big band and curiously enough it ended up looking like a huge group of wild musicians!
"Geri Allen Quartet" was probably the most influential jazz show of my life and Ravi Coltrane seemed to encompass the whole universe with his music. When he blew I heard the creation and destruction of the whole universe and I felt I would burst out of my skin, torn between this world and the glimpse I was getting of another one.
